Spiritual Truth Doesn't Pay the Rent

Updated: 2 days ago

Why am I here? Where is here? Who am I? We usually ask these questions in this order when life gets overwhelming. But to actually find peace in them, you have to answer them backward.

Who am I?

You are the Self. Whole, peaceful, and divine at your core.

Where is here?

"Here" is an illusion of the mind. You’ve been so caught up in the world over lifetimes that you can’t imagine it not being real. But let’s define real. Real is anything permanent. It never changes. Look around. Name one thing in this world that is permanent. You can’t. The nature of the world is change. The only constant in this world is change. Therefore, the world cannot be real.

Why am I here?

You are here to experience. If the Self is already whole, it doesn't need anything. It isn't trying to win a prize or learn a lesson it didn't already know. It built this whole stage just to feel what it's like to exist in a body, in a story, in this world.

To be honest, knowing spiritual truth doesn't pay the rent.

Knowing it's all an illusion doesn't stop your stomach from dropping when everything falls apart at once. When life is just one chaotic event after another, you get exhausted. You start looking back at your life wondering, Why is this happening?

It’s just an effect of a cause we lived and forgot. Karma. Like paying your Afterpay balance and forgetting what you bought.

The spiritual path is not a painkiller for human suffering. While the Self is the silent Witness, the human in the costume has to act. It isn't about trying to force yourself t

o feel peaceful when your life is on fire either. It just comes down to one quiet thought that keeps you going when you're completely worn out: it's all temporary.

The peace doesn't come from pretending the fire isn't hot. It comes from remembering that a storm passes through. It builds, it rages, and then it disappears. It has no choice, because nothing in this world gets to stay. It is all temporary.

The chaos will run its course. The hard scene will end. And when the dust settles, you will still be standing unbroken, whole, and free. Just as you have always been. You are bigger than any situation you face.
